Zombie Survival Test

Some guy who goes by "ci8db4uok" made a little quiz called "The Zombie Scenario Survival Test". I'm going to be honest - I'm unimpressed. While I did perform well enough to be considered a survivor (at 78%), I feel that a sufficient argument can be made for every one of my answers over what his quiz may have been expecting.

The bottom line is this - many of the questions on this quiz are simply too ambiguous to reasonably expect anyone to score 100%, no matter how skilled in zombie survival. So here's what I'm going to do. I am going to consult with the other contributors to this blog to create our own zombie survival test with more objective questions. I will then put the link to the test permanently on the site for all to test themselves.

Expect it within the week!

Well, ci8db4uok, like I said - I found the hard questions and ethical dilemmas to be the downfall of your test - and thus the lack of them to be the strongpoint of mine. Why? Well, because if it's a dilemma then can you really tell someone they answered the question wrong? That seems rather arbitrary, wouldn't you agree? I had no scenarios because mine isn't a scenario test - as yours claimed to be. I didn't lift questions from your test. If there are similar questions on mine it's not because they're stolen, it's because of their relevance to zombie survival. Thus if there is a question regarding weapon choice on yours and also on mine, in no way did I even consider your test as a source for that idea. My goal was to create as objective of a zombie survival test as I could - something your test apparently prides itself on NOT doing. Anyway - I'm done arguing test v. test now. I do agree that there is room for improvement in mine, and it's something that I'd like to do - so if you have suggestions that are relevant to the 4 categories tested or care to debate one of the questions feel free. I will not, however, stand for subjective questions on the test as that is unfair to the test-taker.

I just took your test and it said that I scored 34% on weapons proficiency. Sorry, but I own 20 different firearms. Your 'correct' answers do not make sense.

I have my own skeet trap and shoot 12 and 20 gauge shotguns for practice every weekend. I shoot about 40 rounds from a .22 rifle after work nearly every day as well as 20 rounds from a Ruger pistol and around 20-40 rounds from my vintage 8mm Mausers on most weekends. I'm a pretty fair shot and know my way around most firearms quite well. I'm an NRA member, I hold an FFL and a hunting license and I write a gun blog. So I can say with some authority that your answers about firearms are silly.

You ask about the greatest drawback of a large-caliber bolt action. Among your options, the answer varies widely by the specific rifle and shooter. A Winchester Model 70 will have you spending a lot of time reloading, but a WW2 Mauser or Mosin Nagant can be reloaded within as little as 2.5 seconds using stripper clips. If it's a carbine with a bayonet then it might work very well for close quarters work. If it's a full length rifle without a bayonet lug then not so much.

There are problems like this with all of your firearms related questions. You might know zombies but I suggest that you spend a lot more time on a shooting range and reading up on ballistics before considering yourself 'safe.'

To Jack Landers and Combat Wombat:

Jack first - Though the test no longer is functional, I'll go ahead and defend it posthumously. Here's the thing, you probably scored a 34% on weapons proficiency not because you got the firearm questions wrong, but because you sucked it up on everything else. Fact is I guarantee I've shot as wide a variety of firearms as yourself, and the things you bring up were considered when creating the quiz because I was aware of the issues. So, briefly on your discussion of the drawbacks of a high-caliber, bolt-action rifle - the vast majority of this type of rifle that the zombie-survivalist will have is a typical hunting rifle. You need only reference your vast experiences at the rifle range to verify this fact. You're a collector - of course you're gonna have guns that function as exceptions to the rule. Who cares? When Joe Schmoe breaks into the local sporting goods store to secure weapons against zombies, he will most likely secure himself an average, every day hunting rifle if he opts for the bolt-action rifle. In this case, however, there are obviously going to be problems with reload time, magazine capacity, CQB capability, etc. So don't play the I-know-more-about-guns-than-you card. You probably don't, and even if you do it's probably totally irrelevant to how the test played out - here's why:

The interesting thing about your score is that it doesn't tell you which of the questions you missed. So you probably got all the gun questions right, but had a propensity for choosing stupid melee's like chainsaws or whatever. It's not my fault that all you know about is guns - and that's certainly not a reason for you to reject the results of the test.

Combat Wombat - If you made "Zombie Killa" you should be jumping up and down because I think that you're the first person I've actually heard of who has made that rank. The only one higher is "Zombie Badass" and the picture is of Jack Bauer - and I think we both know you're not Jack Bauer. So no - your weapons and survival skills shouldn't exceed that rank since you're probably in the high 99th percentile of people who took the test.

As far as you being a contributor goes, I can't allow it. The only people who have been contributors have all been people that I know three things about. #1 - they know a lot about zombies. #2 - they know a lot about zombie-style survival. #3 - they all know how to write pretty well, so as to ensure the blog entries keep a certain amount of respectability to them. Since I don't know you I can't know #3 (I'm going to assume #1 and #2 because of your performance on the test), and thus can't add you as a contributor.

Ya, most tests about Z survival are just a load, I'm not saying yours is but still, most just talk about how to survive against zombies physically and not mentally I mean come on, sure you would prob survive with food, water, and ammo but what will keep you from going insane or just blowing your own head off

i agree with jack landers. while i dont know what NRA is (pretty sure it stands for national something association)i do think that your right. i went on another test and scored a rank of 76 survival rating. this test is good. it has questions like "if you were running away from zombies what vehicle would you chose?"(i chose 4X4 pickup truck)so its pretty good.
